Monastrell /mon ah STREL/
Aka Mourvèdre. If you love Cabernet Sauvignon then Monastrell is your bag. Monastrell is a full-bodied and rustic wine that originated in Spain. The seafaring Phoenicians brought it over as early as 500 B.C. It is used quite often as a blending grape in popular wines such as Châteauneuf du Pape and is one of the major grapes of the Rhône. Monastrell is the third most widely planted grape in Spain, and has good resistance to drought.
Joven /HO ven/
Spanish wines are often labelled according to the amount of aging the wine has received. When the label says vino joven ("young wine") the wines will have undergone very little, if any, wood aging. Depending on the producer, some of these wines will be meant to be consumed very young - often within a year of their release. Others will benefit from some time aging in the bottle.
