CHAYEE BOURRAS San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina

Chayee Bourras, located in the foothills of the Andes in the Mendoza area, is an 8-acre vineyard with 40-plus year old Bondara vines. It is a partnership between a couple of Canadian families who had been looking all over the world for a vineyard to call their own, and the Gomez family, who owned the vineyard and shared their vision of making an iconic wine. Together, they have created this boutique winery with very small production of Bondara.

Case:  12x750ml
Region:  AOP Languedoc, France
Varietal:   70% Syrah, 30% Grenache
Alcohol: 13%
BC Price: $15.46

Quick Notes: With low yields and careful winemaking, this Syrah Grenache blend, from Fontès in the Languedoc,  packs real value. Deep red with ruby highlights, you'll find spicy, smoky aromas with notes of blackcurrant and cherry intermingled with cocoa. The tannins are silky and ripe. It is a wine that has a good persistence on the palate. The Cave Fontesole cooperative (Les Vignerons de Fontès) was founded in 1930 by thirty winemakers, however only 10 are providing grapes for Fontesole wines. Fontesole yields are 25 to 30% lower than most IGP d’OC. The few vine growers are proud and attentive, involved and concerned to provide perfectly ripe berries to make fruity and generous wines, reflecting the Pézenas terroir.

Their range of wines feature the indigenous grapes of Campania and are available in Canada under the Cantine Faliesi label, named for the slopes of Mount Faliesi where the vineyards are located.

MONTMAJOR Salento, Puglia, Italy
MONTMAJOR Salento, Puglia, Italy

Located near the river Ofanto in the centre of the Salento Peninsula, Montemajor sits at the centre of a region whose strategic importance made it a cultural gateway between the East and the West. The philosophy of the winery is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of this unique and ancient land.

Region & Vineyard Notes

San Marzano, on the Salento Peninsula is situated close to the better-known town of Manduria, where Primitivo is at its most prestigious. This position in the middle of the Salento peninsula means it gets cooling sea winds from both the Adriatic sea to the east and the closer Ionian sea to the west. Deep red soil, interspersed with limestone contribute to lively acidity and minerality resulting in a freshness that makes them very enjoyable to drink. The extremely hot, dry summers means that the traditional bush vine system is better at surviving and thriving in the dry, sun-baked climate.

IRONWORKS DISTILLERY Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
IRONWORKS DISTILLERY Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Based in the historic port town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (home to the famous Bluenose Schooners) partners Pierre Guevremont and Lynne MacKay opened Ironworks Distillery in 2010. The couple started with a desire to make a hand-crafted product that was uniquely connected to the Maritimes. They purchased a copper wood-burning still and found a home for it in a 19th-century former marine blacksmith’s shop, which inspired the distillery name.  They make small batches of their unique vodka, gins, rums, brandies, and liqueurs using Nova Scotia fruit and botanicals.
