LODALI  Barbera d’Alba Lorens

Tasting Notes

Complex with an elegant touch of blueberries, blackberries and spices. Full-bodied on the palate with a balanced structure and a long lasting finish. The “Lorens” is a very special Cru created by Walter Lodali, in loving dedication to his father. The wine is produced in an extremely limited quantity only--134 cases.

 Barbera d’Alba DOC

Barbera, with its ancient origins, is the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy (after Sangiovese and Montepulciano) and accounts for nearly half of all the grapes grown in Piedmont. All around Alba are the kind of rolling hills which have come to symbolize the Piedmontese landscape. Barbera vines thrive in the chalky, limestone-rich clay soils here. Barbera d'Alba wines are generally esteemed for their deep color, low tannins and high levels of acidity. For a wine to be legally labeled as Barbera d'Alba, it must be made from at least 85% Barbera grapes.

95 points

Red and black fruits, violet and Indian spice on the nose. Rich palate with liquorice and kirsch, uplifting zesty acidity and well integrated silky tannins. Lovely fruit concentration and purity. A well made wine which will benefit from ageing.

Region Notes

On the steep slopes surrounding the town of Alba within the Piemonte region, Barbera fruits share soil with the noble Nebbiolo. The earlier-ripening Barbera is grown on the cooler lower slopes below the Nebbiolo, and has traditionally been viewed as the common wine for every-day consumption. The exception is wines like the Lodali Lorens, where careful viticulture and skilled winemaking produce magnificent wines with great depth of character. The Lorens come from select grapes from the Bricco Ambrogio and Rocche dei Sette Fratelli vineyards.
