AGRICOLA I FABBRI Tuscany, Italy
AGRICOLA I FABBRI Tuscany, Italy

The Grassi family has been growing grapes and producing olive oil on this same plot of land on the beautiful hills of Lamole in Chianti Classico since the 17th century. Generation after generation of experience and work have brought these vineyards to the heights of excellence in wine and oil production. Sisters Susanna and Maddalena took over the running of the estates in 2000, creating Agricola i Fabbri, named for the blackmith's forge in the village with overlooks the vineyards, and for the second occupation of many generations of the Grassi family, after farming.

The sisters have spent the past decade developing sustainable farming practices and attained organic certification in 2010.

BLACK MARKET WINE CO. Okanagan Valley, B.C.
BLACK MARKET WINE CO. Okanagan Valley, B.C.

Small batch wines from "Garagiste" winemakers Michelle Shewchuk and Rob Hammersley, hand-crafting their wines at a cooperative winery in Okanagan Falls called the BC Wine Studio. It’s a model that’s been used in Europe for centuries, but is relatively new to Canada. It’s a fantastic environment that encourages collaboration and the sharing of ideas, equipment and techniques between all the winemakers.

At Black Market, the goal is to make each wine with a strong expression of the varietal character, and with the least amount of winemaker intervention as possible. The vineyards from which they source their grapes are responsibly farmed by growers who care as much about quality as they do. From the moment the grapes are harvested and arrive at the crush pad, they delicately craft them in small lots, ensuring every single bottle of Black Market wine boasts exceptional quality and flavour.

"Chalky, fragrant white melon and tropical florals. The palate has a chalky, dry and compact shape. Drink now."

Tiny production (fewer than 2000 bottles) of an almost unknown grape from old vines. Fermented and aged in French oak barrels. Historically, Albillo contributed texture to the red wines of the Meseta – a role similar to that of Viognier in Côte Rôtie.

CANTINE FALIESI Campania, Italy

Cantine Faliesi is owned and operated by the Urciuolo brothers (a.k.a Marina's cousins), Antonello and Ciro, in the foothills of Mt. Vesuvius around the famed town of Naples. Theirs was the first Fiano D.O.C vineyard in Forino planted back in 1992. At that time Antonello and Ciro were just 20 and 23, but they were determined that to produce a wine with the family name. In 1996 their dream was realised, and the first Fratelli Urciuolo wines reached the Italian market -- and soon after they were recognized with The Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri award. Their range of wines feature the indigenous grapes of Campania and are available in Canada under the Cantine Faliesi label, named for the slopes of Mount Faliesi where the vineyards are located.

DOMAINE THIERRY DROUIN Macon, Burgundy, France
DOMAINE THIERRY DROUIN Macon, Burgundy, France

The small, artisanal winery of Domaine Thierry Drouin is one of those producers who gets it right. Established in 1984, the Domaine covers 9 hectares (a little over 22 acres). Truly a family-run operation, Thierry Drouin traces his history as a winemaker back through his father and grandfather. Today, with his wife Corinne, he uses the same methods that he learned under their tutelage. He is also a long time believer in certain aspects of biodynamic wine production; no insecticides are used to treat the vines for instance, and herbicides are used only when necessary.

Domaine Thierry Drouin is located deep in the south of Burgundy in the village of Vergisson, a Mâconnais commune known for producing world class Pouilly‐Fuissé and elegant Mâcon whites. The region is almost entirely dedicated to the production of Chardonnay, with vines that are rooted deep in the quintessential clay limestone soils that give the wines of this region their characteristic aromas and flavours.

Quick Notes: With low yields and careful winemaking, this Syrah Grenache blend, from Fontès in the Languedoc,  packs real value. Deep red with ruby highlights, you'll find spicy, smoky aromas with notes of blackcurrant and cherry intermingled with cocoa. The tannins are silky and ripe. It is a wine that has a good persistence on the palate. The Cave Fontesole cooperative (Les Vignerons de Fontès) was founded in 1930 by thirty winemakers, however only 10 are providing grapes for Fontesole wines. Fontesole yields are 25 to 30% lower than most IGP d’OC. The few vine growers are proud and attentive, involved and concerned to provide perfectly ripe berries to make fruity and generous wines, reflecting the Pézenas terroir.

Quick Notes: "The 2012 Vigno Carignan is pure Carignan from Loncomilla fermented in open stainless steel vats and aged for 18 months in barriques and oak foudres. This has the unmistakable nose of Gillmore: all flowers and aromatic herbs, hints of mint, even a touch of eucalyptus that is easy to recognize in a blind tasting. The palate shows some grainy, slightly dusty tannins that call for food, which paired with the high acidity (pH 3.28) makes it somehow austere and serious -- a bit of a contrast with the explosive nose. This has the stuffing and acidity to develop a long time in bottle. " - Robert Parker

HEUCQ PERE & FILS Champagne, France
HEUCQ PERE & FILS Champagne, France

Champagne HEUCQ Père & Fils was founded in 1920 in Cuisles, in the heart of the Marne Valley. The domain has over 6 ha of vineyards, with a focus on Pinot Meunier. The wines tend toward natural methods, but adhere to no specific dogma. In producing his wines, André is focused primarily on a complex assemblage of base wines that will produce a well-balanced champagne. The end result should be serious, full bodied and yet also highly fresh and elegant thanks to Cuisles's notably cool climate. Shy, refined aromas whisper rather than yell, just like their maker. André Heucq is a congenial, friendly yet reserved fellow who knows nonetheless exactly what he's doing and what he likes.
Organic & Biodynamic. Limited production.

The vineyards are in the village of Cuisles, in the heart of Vallée de la Marne.  Their unique green clay Illite soils are rich in nutrients and needs less water than the typical chalky clay of the region. Thanks to this unusual combination of soil and micro-climate, Meunier wines from Cuisles can truly be said to be ‘champagnes de terroir’. They have a mineral quality that is rare in other Meunier wines and, contrary to what is sometimes said about Meunier, they have good aging potential.

Mandrarossa, Sicily, Italy
Mandrarossa, Sicily, Italy

Mandrarossa is a boutique arm of Settesoli, the most important wine Co-op in Menfi, Sicily.  The educational arm of the company invested years of intense research activity in the vineyard, discovering which varietals were best suited for each particular microclimate. Mandrarossa wines are estate grown in small, family run vineyards where respect for the environment and love for the land results in great quality wines.

Menfi is on the southwestern coast of Sicily, a unique and pristine area made up of rolling hills with different slopes, aspects and altitudes which combined with the types of soils, create many different terroirs, each ideal for a different variety. The environmental conditions at this latitude are ideal for the cultivation of grapes: the dry climate, the intense light, the influence of the sea breezes and the differences in temperatures by day and night, all combine in making the vineyards healthy and their grapes of great quality.

MONTMAJOR Salento, Puglia, Italy
MONTMAJOR Salento, Puglia, Italy

Located near the river Ofanto in the centre of the Salento Peninsula, Montemajor sits at the centre of a region whose strategic importance made it a cultural gateway between the East and the West. The philosophy of the winery is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of this unique and ancient land.

Region & Vineyard Notes

San Marzano, on the Salento Peninsula is situated close to the better-known town of Manduria, where Primitivo is at its most prestigious. This position in the middle of the Salento peninsula means it gets cooling sea winds from both the Adriatic sea to the east and the closer Ionian sea to the west. Deep red soil, interspersed with limestone contribute to lively acidity and minerality resulting in a freshness that makes them very enjoyable to drink. The extremely hot, dry summers means that the traditional bush vine system is better at surviving and thriving in the dry, sun-baked climate.

TERRAVISTA VINEYARDS Naramata Bench, BC
TERRAVISTA VINEYARDS Naramata Bench, BC

Terravista Vineyards was started in 2008 by Bob and Senka Tennant, who were also the co-founders of Black Hills and the cult wine Nota Bene. They produce only small volumes of white wine (2,000 cases per year) from their Narmata Bench winery, handling all aspects ofproductions themselves. Ever the trail-blazers, have chosen to focus on varietals that are unusual for B.C., growing Spanish varietals Albarino and Verdejo on the estate and purchasing their Rhone varietals from neighbouring vineyards. The grapes were chosen from the couple's quest to make "that quintessential wine that would marry well with many foods that we gravitate to in the warm months of the year."

The reviews of their wines have been outstanding, receiving 90 points from John Schreiner, Anthony Gismondi, Wine Align and the National Post. We are very excited to introduce these wonderful wines to the Alberta market!

Bramble Bubbly is produced by milling then juicing Island apples, after which, champagne yeast is added to begin fermentation. IRONWORKS DISTILLERY Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
IRONWORKS DISTILLERY Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Based in the historic port town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (home to the famous Bluenose Schooners) partners Pierre Guevremont and Lynne MacKay opened Ironworks Distillery in 2010. The couple started with a desire to make a hand-crafted product that was uniquely connected to the Maritimes. They purchased a copper wood-burning still and found a home for it in a 19th-century former marine blacksmith’s shop, which inspired the distillery name.  They make small batches of their unique vodka, gins, rums, brandies, and liqueurs using Nova Scotia fruit and botanicals.

Made in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in a 19th-century marine blacksmith's shop which inspired the name.

Quick Notes: Weaving some local plants into the traditional gin botanicals we've produced a lyrical but resolutely straightforward take on a classic London Dry Gin. Juniper takes the lead, of course, and includes a portion of Nova Scotia's juniper berry crop. Coriander, angelica and orris root form the herbal base notes and locally foraged rose-hips along with a measure of balsam fir-bud infusion combine for a gin of forest and florals. Now go find some good tonic water and enjoy.

This rum is highly fragrant and follows with a clean, sharp and sugary finish.
