Tasting Notes

Aromatic with floral notes. Fresh acidity and a smooth mid-palate and good persistence on the finish. Macabeo is known as Viura in Rioja, and is adaptable to the full range of winemaking styles.

Aka Viura in Rioja. A relatively versatile grape, it is used in still, sparkling, dry and sweet wines. There are few universal truths about how Macabeo tastes; the wines can be fresh, floral and aromatic when harvested sufficiently early and aged in stainless steel, but weighty, honeyed and nutty when aged in oak and harvested slightly later. It is the principal ingredient in white wines from Rioja, where the locals call it Viura, and it is used in almost every wine district of Catalonia, particularly in sparkling Cava wines, where it is blended with Parellada and Xarel-lo.

Winemaking Notes

Chaval Macabeo is made with careful monitoring of maturation to determine the optimal time to harvest for a subsequent selection of grapes and controlled fermentation at low temperature.

Region & Vineyard Notes

Finca El Renegado (The Renegade) is an organic 540-hectare estate of unique ecological and oenological character. It is surrounded by pine forest and punctuated by eight monumental holm oaks, which affect the development of the grapes. Close to the sea breezes, this mediterranean influence affects the vineyard. Grapes ripen smaller and with greater concentration of fruit and flavour, setting the estate apart and making wines of unique character.
