Negroamaro /NEH gro ah mah roh/
Translated from Italian, the name means “dark, bitter” however, it may come from old Greek and Latin, which would approximately translate to “dark black.” It is an ancient varietal that was likely brought to southern Italy by the Illyrians colonists before the Greeks arrived in the 7th century BC. Grown throughout Puglia, Negroamaro is most often associated with the southern part of the region: the Salento peninsula. Here, two provinces are known to produce particularly good examples, Lecce and Brindisi.
Region Notes
The Salento peninsula, sometimes referred to as the heel of Italy’s boot, lies in the southern-most portion of Puglia, between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. The terroir here is typical of Puglia – hot, flat and dry. The landscape is dominated by olive groves on a scale quite unlike any other part of Italy. Puglia generates almost half of Italy's olive oil.
